Ekovir 400 is an antiviral drug, a synthetic analogue of the acyclic purine nucleoside, which has a highly selective effect on herpes viruses. In virus-infected cells, under the action of viral thymidine kinase, phosphorylation occurs and further sequential transformation of acyclovir into mono-, di-, and triphosphate. Acyclovir phosphate is incorporated into the chain of viral DNA and blocks its synthesis through competitive inhibition of viral DNA polymerase. After ingestion, bioavailability is 15–30%, while dose-dependent concentrations are created that are sufficient for effective treatment of viral diseases. Food has no significant effect on the absorption of Ekovir 400. Acyclovir penetrates well into many organs, tissues and body fluids. Ekovir 400 is taken during or immediately after a meal with plenty of water. The dosing regimen is set individually depending on the severity of the disease. Acyclovir is prescribed 200 mg (five times a day) for 5 days at 4-hour intervals during the day and at 8-hour intervals for the night. Treatment should begin as soon as possible after the onset of infection.
