ACCUTANE is a retinoid for systemic treatment of acne. Improving the clinical picture of severe acne is associated with the suppression of the activity of the sebaceous glands and the reduction of their size, depriving Propionibacterium acnes of the main substrate for growth. The drug inhibits sebocyte proliferation and acts on acne, restoring the normal process of cell differentiation. It has a proven anti-inflammatory effect of Isotretinoin on the skin. ACCUTANE is used to treat severe forms of acne (nodular-cystic, conglobating acne or acne with the risk of scarring) and acne that is not amenable to other therapies. Isotretinoin should be prescribed only by physicians, preferably dermatologists, who are experienced in using systemic retinoids and who are aware of the risk of drug teratogenicity. Patients, both female and male, should be given instructions with information regarding the product for the patient. The daily recommended doses range from 0.4 to 1 mg per pound of patient weight. Patients with very severe forms of the disease or with acne torso may require higher daily doses - up to 2.0 mg per pound. It is recommended to monitor liver function and liver enzymes before treatment, one month after its onset, and then every three months or as indicated. Patients receiving ACCUTANE are recommended to use moisturizing ointment or body cream and lip balm to reduce dry skin and mucous membranes at the beginning of therapy.
